Geles Cabrera: Museo Escultórico

Americas Society / New York / Art

The father of Geles Cabrera, a Mexican sculptor, owned a factory where papier-mâché decorations were churned out quickly for the well-to-do. Cabrera was born in 1926, and by the 1940s she was studying both music and fine arts, going to the academy in the morning and dancing in the afternoons and evenings. Cabrera’s mature work has reflected on the female body, examining loneliness, love, and motherhood in bronze and terracotta, but also in rock and plexiglass. Her figures are abstract, but sentient, rounded, and warm. With 50 works, this exhibition covers 40 years of Cabrera’s career. —E.C.
