The Western word chivalry derives from the old French term “chevalerie,” or “horse soldiery,” while its Eastern parallel, furusiyya, derives from the Arabic term “fāris,” or “horseman.” From France and Spain to Iraq and Syria, medieval knights were linked by the noble animal upon which they rode. The Louvre Abu Dhabi takes up the reins of this fascinating subject, presenting more than 130 rare historic artworks and objects to provide a picture of the world’s chivalric codes, beginning in antiquity. —J.V.
