Franz Erhard Walther: Shifting Perspectives

Haus der Kunst / Munich / Art

In the early 1960s, Franz Erhard Walther began experimenting with fabric, a highly unusual artistic medium at the time. During his musings, he came up with the concept of “activation objects”—fabric structures that viewers can wear or enter. It was a way to transform the body into a medium, or, as Walther saw it, a way to transform life into an image. In this exhibition, activation pieces—including The First Work Set (1969) and wall formations from the 1980s—beguile viewers into unpredictable situations. —E.C.
