As the late architect and educator Paul Rudolph once said, “An architect is a man concerned with building meaningfully.” For Rudolph, meaning didn’t just come from bricks and mortar, but from light, specifically, site-specific lighting. A cofounder of Modulightor, with Ernst Wagner, Rudolph designed the Modulightor Building at 246 East 58th Street. Showrooms and a fabrication center are on lower floors, but an amazing modernist duplex on the 3rd and 4th floors—the only Rudolph-designed interior open to the public—is available for exploration on the first Friday of every month. —E.C.
