Fidelio, by Ludwig van Beethoven

Theater an der Wien / Vienna / Music

Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, lives in three versions: 1805, 1806, and 1814. This is a new production of the second version—1806—which reduced the first version from three acts to two. It was more successful than the 1805, but not the resounding success of the further-revised final version. For completists, however, this is a chance to know every incarnation of the opera. The story: Leonore attempts to save her husband, a political prisoner facing death, by disguising herself as the prison guard “Fidelio.” Bravery leads to liberty, an eternal theme in the work of Beethoven. —L.J.
