How does art reach into a viewer? And how much does the viewer bring to its meaning? Though man is regarded as a rational being, the extent to which emotion and prior knowledge can condition our interpretation of an artwork is an area that has remained largely unexplored. Gathering together 100 paintings, films, and objects from 40 artists, the Pinakothek curators have intentionally provided no context for the works on display. No wall texts next to paintings. No explanations of any kind. The idea is that the art will speak for itself, and each viewer will listen. Artists in this exhibition include Tracey Emin, Catherine Opie, Richard Prince, Elmgreen & Drafset, and many more. —E.C.
