In a time when male artists distorted female figures according to their own wayward fantasies, women’s contributions to the Surrealist movement were often lost in the wind, unless the woman was also a man’s muse or model. But quietly, women artists were reaching into the imagery of myth, religion, and politics, exploring their own identities through the freedoms of surrealism. An unprecedented exhibition of 260 works by 34 female Surrealists presents the unsung achievements within a historic movement. —E.C.
