Eugene Onegin, by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Opéra de Montréal / Montreal / Music

“But I’m not made for bliss,” says Eugene Onegin in Pushkin’s eponymous poem of 1833, “my soul is strange to it.” And so he spurns the love of young Tatiana. Here was a story tailor-made for Tchaikovsky, who composed his opera in 1879 and wished it to be performed simply. Director Tomer Zvulun’s production of Eugene Onegin answers that wish with clean lines, clear storytelling, and elegant, uncluttered sets. —L.J.
