The biologist E. O. Wilson has issued a bleak prognosis: The Earth is entering an “Eremozoic” era, or “The Age of Loneliness.” Wilson predicts an incipient mass extinction triggered by climate change, accompanied by psychological disorientation among humans as we watch species disappear and natural disasters increase. Inspired by this vision, the photographer Jim Naughten has created a series of “digital paintings”—photographs altered digitally—that show animals in color-manipulated natural habitats. A forlorn manatee floats above aubergine seagrass. A brown bear stands in a blood-red field. Orangutans swing in baby-blue boughs. The first photography exhibition presented by Grove Square Galleries, “Eremozoic” has been described by Naughten as “his most important to date.” —J.D.
