Lee Chun-yi, who has long studied ink and its application, recently developed his own stamping technique. Fusing ink-rubbing, calligraphy, carving, and printing, the effect of Lee’s artwork is best described as photorealist. Eastern scripture and iconic literati symbols (pine trees, blossoms, scholar’s rocks) float like 3-D images. The precision of the ink work? Cut as if by a surgeon’s knife. —E.C.
