Edward Hopper

Fondation Beyeler / Basel / Art

“In general,” the American artist Edward Hopper suggested, “it can be said that a nation’s art is greatest when it most reflects the character of its people.” Depicting America’s endless cityscapes and landscapes, Hopper captured the character of his nation. With commercial buildings, clapboard houses, and roadside stops as recurring subjects, Hopper’s paintings and watercolors explore the isolating spaces built into American daily life. At Fondation Beyeler, work from the 1910s to the 1960s is on view. —E.C.
