Edvard Munch: Masterpieces from Bergen

Courtauld Gallery / London / Art

“For as long as I can remember,” said the artist Edvard Munch, “I have suffered from a deep feeling of anxiety which I have tried to express in my art.” Under the guidance of the philosopher and anarchist Hans Jæger, Munch expressed this inner restlessness through his “soul paintings.” His use of pigment, his experimental techniques—these influenced the medium of painting. This exhibition of 18 works focuses on Munch’s move toward psychologically charged expression, and includes his pivotal Summer Night (1889) and the “Frieze of Life” series. —E.C.
