duendita/KUMBAYA

Public Records / New York / Music

Originally from Queens, duendita—otherwise known as Candace Camacho (who uses they/them/their pronouns)—makes music that puts them in touch with their creator. Camacho, who is Puerto Rican and Afro-Latinx, grew up going to church. They still go, sometimes, but the main way they express the spiritual is through their music, which draws from jazz, soul, and R&B. On 2018’s direct line to my Creator, they sang big songs with cozy, warm-toned melodies about big love, both for their friends and the divine. On February 11, Camacho will take the stage at Public Records, a state-of-the-art performance space in Gowanus, Brooklyn. —S.K.
