“I’d rather have been a composer of operas and songs,” the artist and author Maurice Sendak once said. “Where music and words mix and blend and incredibly excite—defines my ideal.” It’s no surprise, then, that Sendak enjoyed a second career designing sets and costumes for operas and ballets. “Drawing the Curtain” exhibits 150 objects from these endeavors, including storyboards, preparatory sketches, costume studies, watercolors, and miniature dioramas. —L.J.
