“We’re living in a tremendously new landscape, and the possibility of what can be created is immense,” says the American multimedia artist Doug Aitken. “These tools of the moving image have a relatively short history in art, and what we can do with them is still largely unknown.” Aitken’s multifaceted oeuvre sees him making installations, photographs, objects, and immersive environments. He created a mirror house in Gstaad—a sleek Art Nouveau structure that reflects the mountain clouds. In London, at the Victoria Miro gallery, he created a “portrait of the present,” mounting glow figures and furniture in the exhibition space. At the MCA, he is presenting a large-scale sound installation, Sonic Fountain II, along with New Era, a video work featuring the American engineer Martin Cooper. —E.C.
