DESCRIPTION:Nov 13\, 2026 - Jan 16\, 2027\nDoris Salcedo has always been in
terested in the things that remain: the domestic objects left behind\, the
traces of absent bodies. Born in Bogotá in 1958\, the Colombian artist h
as spent much of her career confronting the human consequences of politica
l violence\, and making “visible the experiences of the most vulnerable
and most anonymous victims.” Her latest works\, House and Grains of Sorr
ow\, now installed at White Cube\, use individual strands of human hair—
knotted\, woven\, and assembled by hand over the course of years. It is an
unsettling material\, as hair is both intimate and anonymous\, suggesting
an individual life but no easy identification. Salcedo uses hair to addre
ss the devastation of displacement and the basic needs of shelter and sust
enance. Grains of Sorrow is made up of small vessels made from rice and ha
ir. Arranged on the gallery floor\, they are modest in scale but not in im
plication\, for they oppose the man-made starvation that is still used as
a weapon of war. The meticulous\, handmade process also draws attention to
the often-overlooked labor of workers across the Global South\, who drive
the global economy. “A collective statement is far more powerful than a
lonely solo voice\,” Salcedo tells White Cube. “It becomes like a cho
rus\, and a really potent one.”
