Against the backdrop of Socialist Hungary, Dóra Maurer’s artistic practice wandered freely—but also cooly and conceptually—from design and photography to paintings of intersecting color planes and spaces. Perhaps this is why, Maurer has said, “In exhibitions abroad, my nationality has never been the focus of interest.” The Tate exhibition—her first in the U.K.—draws from nearly five decades of work and presents Maurer on her own terms: precise, intellectual, universal. —C.J.F.
