  in 1935. During the Blitz\, when he was five\, he was taken to Somerset. 
 But war never really left him. A 18\, McCullin was called to the National 
 Service and served as a photographer’s assistant. After his service ende
 d\, he became an overseas correspondent for the Sunday Times Magazine\, co
 vering the Vietnam War\, the African AIDS epidemic\, and conflicts in Nort
 hern Ireland. “Sometimes it felt like I was carrying pieces of human fle
 sh back home with me\,” McCullin said\, “not negatives.” For his sev
 en-decade career\, McCullin became the first photojournalist to add a CBE 
 to his litany of other awards. In honor of his 90th birthday\, Hauser & Wi
 rth has curated a retrospective of McCullin’s photographs that includes 
 his only self-portrait\, on display in the U.K. for the very first time.
