A survey of trans representation in film and television over 100 years—from the work of D. W. Griffith in the early 20th century, through Jerry Springer at the end, and up into the 21st century—Disclosure looks at a history of cruel stereotypes and violent storylines. Trans filmmakers, performers, and writers generously share their contemporary and clarifying perspectives, as well as context. “There are lots of very ugly things about our history,” says the director Yance Ford, in reference to the media’s treatment and depiction of trans characters, “but I think we have to know them.” —C.J.F.
