In June the New York Times brought attention to a conflict underway at the Museo del Barrio, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary with a historical survey. The museum was founded in East Harlem to showcase Puerto Rican-American art. As it grew it welcomed works from artists throughout Central and South America, angering New York members of the Latinx community, who are demanding that the museum refocus on art by Puerto Ricans and Latin Americans living in the U.S. With “Culture and the People,” the museum proposes a coexistence of Latin artists from the U.S. and abroad in a shared space. —J.V.
