The German Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder is remembered for a lot more than his remarkable portraiture. He was a political activist in the town of Wittenberg, and the force behind huge changes in age-old religious practices. He was also best friends with the revolutionary Martin Luther. Even 500 years later, Cranach’s influence endures as a radical thinker. In this online exhibition striking images and a beautifully-produced video tour shed light on his rich and innovative life. There is also a podcast conversation with the show’s curator and contemporary artists influenced by Cranach. The gallery intends to eventually open the exhibition to the public. —E.C.
