Craigie Aitchison’s work is synonymous with the Beaux Arts generation, a small group of figurative painters that emerged after W.W. II. Crucifixes, dogs, and unlikely protagonists in rich colors star in Aitchison’s striking, slightly surreal compositions. To mark a decade since his death, Piano Nobile spotlights Aitchinson alongside the work of contemporaries that include Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff, and Euan Uglow. —E.C.
