Concentrations 63: Julian Charrière, Towards No Earthly Pole

Dallas Museum of Art / Dallas / Art

Julian Charrière travels to the poles of the world and back, collecting souvenirs from the world’s most inhospitable terrains, exploring the relationship between civilization and its landscapes. “I go into the field and get inspired by what I see, then I bring things back to the studio and do work.” A screening of the videowork he began in 2017—filmed in hostile weather environments that include the Antarctic, the Rodano and Aletsch glaciers in Switzerland, Mont Blanc, Iceland, and Greenland— is at the center of an exhibition that casts new light on Charrière’s worldly relics. —E.C.
