City on the Edge: Art and Shanghai at the Turn of the Millennium

UCCA Edge / Shanghai

In the year 2000, a series of exhibitions occurred across various venues in Shanghai, from municipal museums to retail spaces to warehouses to shopping malls. It was a preview of the city’s burgeoning status as a capital of contemporary art. Twenty years later, China’s artistic practices have expanded, and the historically cosmopolitan city is seeing the effects of globalization. In the opening exhibition for UCCA’s new venue, the museum looks to the city it calls home. —E.C.
