Chronicles of an Island

Photographers' Gallery / London / Art

“My eyes, all this time, have never been those of a ‘distant voyeur,’” said the Cuban photographer Raúl Cañibano in 2016, referring to his decades of documentary work. “I have become like a relative of the campesinos [farmers],” he continues. “I just try to pay a heartfelt tribute to their nobility and hospitality.” A new exhibition of Cañibano’s black-and-white photographs provides a rich look into post-revolution Cuba. —J.V.
