DESCRIPTION:May 21 - Aug 21\, 2026\nThe artist Christo\, who died in 2020\,
made his mark on the world figuratively and literally. Born Christo Vladi
mirov Javacheff in 1935\, in Bulgaria\, he studied art in Sofia under the
Communist Regime\, but fled West to escape oppression. Known for his inter
ventions in public spaces\, Christo worked on a monumental scale\, seeking
the artistic freedom he didn’t have in his early life. He and Jeanne-Cl
aude\, his wife and artistic partner\, wrapped in fabric such landmarks as
Paris’s Pont Neuf and Berlin’s Reichstag\, simultaneously concealing
and revealing them. “They exist in their time\, impossible to repeat\,
” Christo said of his projects. “That is their power\, because they ca
nnot be bought\, they cannot be possessed.” This exhibition at Gagosian
brings to life a 1968 project that was never realized\, an installation th
at explores themes of air and ephemerality. Though small scale\, the work
foregrounds his grander projects\, revealing how his creative practice cam
 e to be.
