Danish musician Casper Clausen, of the indie rock trio Efterklang, named his first solo album Better Way, after a journey of self-exploration and emotional concentration. It’s about “loving stronger, falling harder. It’s about being far away, and it’s about being myself,” he told “Under the Radar” this month. The debut feels like a practice in sonic experimentation. The first track sounds a bit like Bowie, and a bit like old U2—Clausen’s vocals have often been compared to Bono’s—while later tracks are trippier, entering the realms of psychedelic alt-rock. The deeply distinct sound of each song means there is something here for everyone, and while such diversity might make for an incoherent album, Clausen’s deep, clear voice and his loyalty to the indie-pop melody bring unity. —C.J.F.
