Bruno Munari: The Child Within

The Center for Italian Modern Art / New York / Art

The fall-winter show at the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA) focuses on children’s books by the Italian inventor, artist, and designer Bruno Munari. In the 1940s, Munari began using such books to explore his ideas regarding art, design, form, pedagogy, and accessibility. Munari’s “unreadable books” series, on view at CIMA, completely removes text, and instead fills the pages with tactile and visual elements. Each work holds at its core Munari’s interest in playfulness and humor as an artistic strategy. —Antoinette Roberts
