Brazilian Modern: The Living Art of Roberto Burle Marx

New York Botanical Garden / New York

Roberto Burle Marx designed fabrics, jewelry, and stage sets. The world-famous gardens he designed were a combination of all three. “The plant,” he once said, “is also a color, a shape, a volume or an arabesque in itself.” He studied plants in their native habitat, and then used them in avant-garde gardens and modernist landscapes. With a collection of Burle Max’s plants, the New York Botanical Garden recreates his style on its front lawn, in the water garden, and in the conservatory. —L.J.
