Brad Kahlhamer: Swap Meet

Until
Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art / Scottsdale / Art

At age 18, on the first of many road trips, Brad Kahlhamer purchased the head of a javelina (a piglike animal) at a Tucson flea market. It became a habit, this traveling around the country and searching through random objects from various cultures. It’s also a source of inspiration for Kahlhamer’s art. A Native-American, he once lived in the Sonoran Desert in Mesa, Arizona; eventually he swapped the sand and heat for slick New York City. Kahlhamer isn’t interested in the differences between places but in the ways they intersect—what he calls a “third-space.” Flea markets, for example. His second show at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Arts includes paintings, drawings, and sculptures he made in his Brooklyn and Mesa studios. The central installation includes a mobile home Kahlhamer bought at a swap meet in 2019. —J.D.
