“I used a famous mountain” says Yin Zhaoyang of his beginnings, “as a starting point for seeing myself and completing myself.” The “famous mountain” he refers to is traditional landscape painting. He learned the techniques of ancient masters, then observed landscapes with attentive scrutiny. What shines through is not a work’s precision but its peculiar originality. Now expanding from oil painting to installation and sculpture, this multimedia exhibition showcases works both old and new. —E.C.
