Birth Machine Baby

Gagosian / New York / Art

Leave it to the ultra-weird mind of Harmony Korine, the curator of this joint exhibition, to bridge the gap between the artists Mark Prent and H. R. Giger. Prent creates busts and bodies that could double as horror film props, while Giger looks to Egyptian statuary and Francis Bacon, more traditional influences. Korine—the indie-movie wunderkind turned Hollywood director (see the whacked-out Spring Breakers)—unites the two sculptors via the human body, the limits of which both artists test in their work. Like much of what Korine does, Birth Machine Baby is equal parts disturbing and delightful. —C.J.F.
