Wajdi Mouawad’s theatrical career is defined by internationalism: he was born in Lebanon, launched his career in Quebec, and is now the artistic director of La Colline in Paris, one of France’s national theaters. A writer as well as a director, Mouawad’s latest play, Birds of a Kind, reflects his nomadic sensibility, telling the story of star-crossed lovers—she Arab-American, he a German-born Jew—who travel to Israel and discover ancestral secrets. Performed in English, German, Arabic, and Hebrew, it’s getting a major production this year at Canada’s Stratford Festival. —K.F.
