“I make a picture in the same way a child does,” says the painter, musician, and writer Billy Childish, “something ‘out there’ interests me. Making a painting of that ‘something’ then joins me with the universal creator/creation in a more intent way than just being an observer.” The visceral quality of Childish’s landscapes do have the directness of a child. In fact, he paints fast, sometimes finishing a work in a single session. Bounding with energy, the vivid, primal scenes in this online exhibition range from winter sunsets to nocturnal forests. —E.C.
