The Dutch photographer Bertien van Manen, now 78, traveled the world to document the humble realities of her subjects. She looked to unveil the poetry present in everyday life, truths caught in the folds of intimate, ordinary, even unpretty moments. In one of Van Manen’s largest retrospectives yet, her work is displayed alongside the photographs of 14 artists who inspired her, names that include Nan Goldin, Boris Mikhailov, and Rineke Dijkstra. —E.C.
