Betty Parsons: The Queen of the Circus

Alison Jacques Gallery / London / Art

“There are three things we have no control over: our birth; our emotions, if we are sincere; and our death.” So said the artist and art dealer Betty Parsons. Over the course of her life (1900 to 1982), Parsons’ art became increasingly centered on capturing the “sheer energy” of a moment. Here in this solo show her energy is alive. Bold pinks, oranges, and blues are extroverts on grey backgrounds. The effect is startling, as if the colors may jump out of the canvas and run around the room. —E.C.
