DESCRIPTION:Apr 18 - Aug 7\, 2026\nThe artist Benny Andrews once described
himself as a “people’s painter.” He worked to shed light on society
’s struggles\, which he knew personally. The son of sharecroppers\, Andr
ews was born into a family of 10 in 1930 in Plainview\, Georgia. His fathe
r\, George\, was a self-taught artist who became known as the “Dot Man.
” Benny Andrews began drawing at three years old. He was the first of hi
s family to graduate from high school but was unable to attend art school
due to the color of his skin. That galvanized him to amplify his experienc
es as a Black American. “I’d like to say something while I’m here\,
” he explained. “And the best way for me to say it is with painting an
d drawing.” This exhibition spotlights the last body of work that Andrew
 s created before his death\, in 2006. It’s a sweeping three-part series
of ink drawings and collage paintings that trace historical American migra
tion routes. Included are Native Americans and their forced migration on t
he Trail of Tears\, the 1930s Dust Bowl exodus of farmers from the Great P
lains\, and the Great Migration of Black Americans from South to North. An
drews himself followed many of the routes.
