Beethoven dedicated his Symphony No. 3 to Napoléon Bonaparte, but when Bonaparte declared himself Emperor of the French, the composer scratched out the emperor’s name in rage. The Eroica is still heroic—full of struggle, expanding into grandeur, in love with a democratic ideal, the rights of man. Jordi Savall leads his crackerjack period ensemble Le Concert des Nations in Beethoven’s majestic Eroica, followed by Beethoven’s Fifth. —L.J.
