Before the crash and burn of the metaverse, the notion of a parallel world was a near possibility. People were buying property, clothes, and other digital assets for their potential avatars. Though their hopes turned out to be premature, the virtual world continues to transcend our daily lives. In this show, the first human born inside the metaverse—HUMAN ONE—has been transformed into a “kinetic video sculpture” by Mike Winkelmann, an American artist known as Beeple. The traveler, clad in astronaut gear, traverses virtual landscapes on LED screens. The figure is confined to a box, yet somehow feels like a threat. —E.C.
