“I am seeking geometrical structures,” the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes has said, “but with freedom of form and imagery taken from different worlds.” These worlds may oppose one another, but they coexist harmoniously on Milhazes’s canvases. Vibrant arabesques and kaleidoscopes in punchy colors hail Brazilian tradition. European design forms and techniques are reminiscent of Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky. The compositions are geometric and precise, yet project Brazilian alegría. In Milhazes’s first solo museum exhibition in China, recent paintings, sculptures, and collages are on view. —E.C.
