The artist Amy Sherald became a national presence in 2018, when her portrait of Michelle Obama was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery. It was a first in a number of ways. Now, in her first New York solo show, Sherald’s full-scale portraits of everyday African Americans—they’re actually composites—are on view: deeply present, poised, and powerful. —L.J.
