She’d rather people not compare her to Mozart, but can you blame them? At 14, Alma Deutscher is not only a concert-ready fiddler and pianist, she has also produced enough original music to justify a full evening at Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. What’s more, she insists (unfashionably) that music should be beautiful. Which is exactly what those who heard her opera Cinderella found it to be. Who but an academic could complain? —M.G.
