Aïda Muluneh: Water Life

Until
Textile Museum of Canada / Ontario / Art

In 2018, Aïda Muluneh staged the photo series “Water Life” in her native country. Women dressed in vibrant colors were posed in the salt flats of northern Ethiopia—the hottest and driest place on earth. Against the parched white backdrop, the traditional Ethiopian dresses looked even brighter. “For those of us who live in cities, we often take for granted the privilege that we have in relation to water access,” Muluneh has said. “Each piece is a reflection in addressing the impact of water access as it relates to women’s liberation, health, sanitation, and education.” In Canada, the entire series is on view. —J.D.
