Empty public spaces evoke interesting feelings. Perhaps it’s something about the size, or the absence when the lights go down—a sense of something lingering, of melancholy. Candida Höfer addresses these feelings in her large-format, highly formal photographs. Someway or another, she captures a psychological residue, the ghost of what once was. —E.C.
