Perhaps no single event has increased the prominence of art by Black Americans as profoundly as “30 Americans.” The exhibition, which features works by 30 American artists of African descent, comes from the Miami-based Rubell Family Collection (think Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kerry James Marshall, Kara Walker, and Kehinde-Wiley, for starters). After ten years touring museums around the country—a time marked by changes in the art industry as well as the collecting choices of such notables as Sean Combs, Swizz Beatz, and Beyoncé and Jay-Z—this fall marks the show’s Philadelphia stop, the closest it will get to New York. —J.V.
