1720: Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto

Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the Brandenburg Concertos when he was happy. He was living in Coethen, Germany, where he was employed by the music-loving Prince Leopold. Today, Bach is the feather in Leopold’s cap. You could say that the Brandenburg Concertos are too, seeing that Leopold’s virtuosic court orchestra allowed Bach to stretch as a composer. Can you imagine a world without these six gems? —L.J.
