In her 2015 documentary, How to Dance in Ohio, Alexandra Shiva looks at three young women prepping for a spring formal in Columbus. The girls, all on the autism spectrum, are in a social-skills program for people with special needs. The dance—which entails asking out a date, finding a dress, and learning to groove—assesses their readiness for more general independence. This true story has now been adapted into a musical. The pop score comes courtesy of Jacob Yandura, an Ohio native. Rebekah Greer Melocik handled the book and lyrics. The show features a cast of seven autistic actors, several of whom were in the documentary.
